BATIK: THE IMPRINT OF TIME
The Gardens Mall’s Exploring Local Art 4.0 presents Imaginarium II: Batik, The Imprint of Time. Imaginarium II is the sequel to Studio Jun Ong's Imaginarium: Soaring Through Traditions, Landscapes and Dreams (2025). While the inaugural exhibition reimagined the traditional wau as an immersive landscape of light, architecture and imagination, this second chapter turns its attention to batik not simply as fabric, but as a living language of pattern, memory and making that continues to evolve across generations. Created in collaboration with Kapten Batik for The Gardens Mall, the exhibition reimagines the traditions of batik through monumental spatial experiences where light, sound and movement become new tools for storytelling.

Across eight immersive dioramas unfolding over the South and North Palms of The Gardens Mall, visitors experience batik through the lens of time. In the South Palm, “The Past” explores the remarkable craftsmanship behind the batik-making process from shaping delicate copper stamps and applying molten wax to dyeing, dewaxing and drying. Echoing the batik-making process, each installation leaves fleeting imprints of light and shadow that continually shift through time, transforming patterns from something fixed on fabric into something alive in space.

In the North Palm, “The Future” looks beyond the fabric, imagining how batik may continue to leave its imprint on contemporary life. Here, pattern evolves into architecture, play, technology and community, revealing batik not as a static tradition but as a living practice that continues to inspire new forms of creativity and connection.
Nearly 300 metres of specially commissioned hand-stamped batik, created exclusively with Kapten Batik, are transformed into a monumental canopy that weaves through both Palms. Accompanying this is an original eight-part spatial composition by Malaysian sound artist Kamal Sabran. Together as a larger sonic work, these compositions allow visitors to experience the exhibition as a single immersive symphony. Rooted in gamelan, each installation features a different timbre or ensemble, collectively functioning as one expanded gamelan orchestra distributed across space. Much like the repetitive gestures of stamping, waxing and layering that define the batik-making process, evolving rhythmic patterns gradually unfold, where subtle variations emerge through repetition.

Imaginarium II invites visitors to walk through it, play within it and become part of its continuing story. Like every wax stamp pressed onto fabric, each generation leaves its own imprint honouring the past while imagining what comes next.
