Batik has always been more than cloth. It is language — a visual record of the stories, ceremonies, and identities that make us who we are. With PERSONA: The Art of Identity, Kapten Batik's second major collection of 2026, the brand turns to Malaysia's rich archive of cultural and ceremonial heritage and brings it to life through some of the most detailed batik motifs the brand has ever produced.
Available from 20 August 2026 at Kapten Batik boutiques and online, PERSONA arrives just in time for Merdeka — a fitting moment to celebrate the depth and diversity of Malaysian cultural identity.
The Inspiration Behind PERSONA
The collection draws from a range of cultural traditions across Malaysia and Southeast Asia — not as surface decoration, but as a genuine study of craft and ceremony. Kapten Batik's textile designers, Syahirah and Sofeana, spent time researching the visual language of Malaysian and regional cultural traditions before a single motif was drawn.
The result is a collection that references specific, meaningful sources:
-
The expressive eye-line curves of Chinese opera
-
The handcrafted hair of the Mah Meri's Moyang Bajos figures
-
The masks from the Bian Lian performance tradition
-
The tengkolok headdress worn in Dikir Barat
-
Visual motifs from Kuda Kepang and Wayang Kulit
-
Accessories from Mak Yong performances
-
Ceremonial adornments from the diverse cultures of Borneo
Each motif is not simply referenced — it is reinterpreted through batik, translating cultural symbolism into contemporary wearable form.
"Beyond the motifs, each design serves as a canvas of historical values, expressed through the artistry of batik for everyday wear."
Shot at Mah Meri Cultural Village, Pulau Carey

The campaign was shot entirely on location at the Mah Meri Cultural Village in Pulau Carey — a setting chosen not for its aesthetics alone, but for what it represents. The bamboo architecture, the forest canopy, and the warm light of Malaysia's tropics are not backdrops. They are part of the story.
The Kapten Batik creative team, led by Syazwan A., worked with the environment intentionally — using the natural surroundings to reflect the connection between tradition, craftsmanship, and identity that runs through the entire collection.
A living collaboration: During the campaign, the team worked alongside Daiman, the designer and inheritor of the Topeng Mayong Bajos tradition. Daiman shared the origins and significance of the craft — adding depth that goes well beyond what a moodboard can capture. It is the kind of exchange that makes PERSONA something more than a fashion campaign.
The Collection: Three Tiers, One Identity

The PERSONA motifs are produced across all three of Kapten Batik's signature series, each representing a different level of craft and price point. All shirts are available in modern fit and slim fit silhouettes, with short and long sleeve options.
Nusantara — The everyday premium printed series. Lightweight, smooth against the skin, and designed for all-day comfort. The PERSONA motifs translate beautifully across the Nusantara's clean print finish.
Maharaja — The feather-light, hand-block printed series. Each piece carries the subtle variation that comes from the carved wood printing process — no two are exactly alike. The PERSONA designs take on additional character in this format.
Masterpiece — The copper-wax artistry series. The most detailed and labour-intensive pieces in the collection, where the PERSONA motifs reach their full visual complexity. For formal occasions and collectors alike.
